Fostering cultural awareness

Written Material

Robina Shah argues that the term 'culture', should not be used in isolation from race, religion and language. Professionals need to be more responsive and sensitive to the needs of people for whom culture, race, religion and language are important. Organisations wishing to be more pro-active in integrating race and culture must first analyse their definition of cultural diversity in relation to the work of their organisation: strategies to create more appropriately sensitive services are suggested. Also included is a suggested framework aimed at improving access, communication and active participation with families from minority ethnic communities. Keyword: Cross cultural
