This short article stresses that while we may assert the rights of people with disability and commit ourselves to promoting choice, participation and real relationships, we need to work harder at understanding people who do not use language as a tool of communication. It is only by tuning into other expressions of communication that we can offer people with disability the chance to have some control over their own lives. Keyword: Self determination
