Discrimination against women with disabilities
Cooper, a woman with disabilities and a feminist, presents the argument that women with disabilities are not protected by either the Sex Discrimination Act or the Disability Discrimination Act. She begins by stating that certain women have always been set apart and stigmatised; once it was “lore learned women” branded as witches, and now it is women with disabilities. Cooper presents the startling fact that there is no statutory requirement for women to be equally represented in any disability program run by government departments. This is in spite of evidence from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (1988) that women with disabilities are disadvantaged in every way. Keyword: Women
