Integration Imperative: Including Children with Disabilities in the Regular Lives of their Local Neighbourhood Schools
Mike Steer reports on a talk by Doug Biklen, Director of Special Education and Rehabilitation at Syracuse University, New York given at Victoria College, Melbourne. This is a very significant article which explains clearly and simply what needs to be done for inclusive education to really work. It sets out six basic (but profound) principles for inclusion and identifies ways in which segregated education continues under many guises. Biklen looks forward to a world where “difference is ordinary, where students are not classified, labelled or thought of primarily as disabled. Students would be known by their names. They would attend programs with non-disabled students and receive instruction in various subject matters.”
