A policy analysis of family support for families with members with developmental disabilities

This is a draft of a policy analysis of family support in the context of disability policy. It comprehensively focuses on the characteristics of family support programs, the goals, values and principles of family support, historical and policy contexts and barriers. The policy recommendations provided are designed to apply where there is no family support policy, where there is an emerging program of family support, or where there is a well-developed program of family support. They recognise the need for formal, flexible, individualised support and explicitly use the family-systems approach. While this paper relates to American States its sentiments are relevant to Australia. Keyword: Families
