Case management – The dream and the reality

While this article specifically deals with ‘case management’ with regards elderly people, it has direct parallels to the ‘boom’ in case management for people with disabilities. Rungie discusses the dream that sparked the idea of case management – that it would become the independent brokerage needed to meet the needs of individual elderly people, and to advocate on their behalf – and argues that this has not been the reality. This is particularly as ‘case management’ is mostly always part of a larger service system and a responsive individualised service often means taking a stand against such service systems. He also discusses the knowledge that professionals must have if they are to develop truly individualised services. Keyword: Individualisation
