Choice is not an Option

This paper, which was presented at the 1995 ASSID Conference, emphasises the importance of giving people with disabilities choices in their life, of helping them to understand what the choices are, as well as the consequences of making a particular choice. It gives examples of people with disabilities who have been assisted in their decision-making by a citizen advocate. The paper also looks at barriers to real choice, eg. limited housing options, inexperienced staff, attitudes. Keywords: Advocacy, Self Determination
