Handling Small Talk at Work: challenges for workers with intellectual disabilities

While a worker with intellectual disability may be perform his job well, social interaction in the workplace is often a challenge, sometimes to the extent of jeopardising a job. This research focuses on ‘small talk’ in the workplace, and identifies aspects of small talk which may provide difficulties for workers with intellectual disability. The authors promote the idea of preparatory learning of workplace small talk, followed by on-the-job practice. They offer suggestions on how to equip workers for interpersonal workplace interaction.
