Personal assistance -what it is and what it is not

Drawing on personal experience, the author discusses the importance of empowerment in personal assistance. The relationship between the assistant and the assisted should be honest, open and respectful; each should be suited to the other. Providing the assisted person with the funds to manage and control their support is preferable to agency-driven support. It allows the relationship of personal assistance to grow for the benefit of both parties.
