Supports for Community Living: A case study

This case study looks at ways of building on and strengthening natural community supports. It focuses on Melvin White, an elderly man with severe disabilities, and his support worker, Lori Solemo. In a shift away from the current paradigm of ‘program’ to a paradigm of ‘support’, Lori provides more than personal care: she facilitates relationship-building between Melvin and others in the community. This is enriched by the fact that the two have become friends. Keywords: Friendship, Individualisation, Social Activities
