The Integration Imperative

Doug Biklen, Director of the Facilitated Communication Institute at Syracuse University, discusses the formidable obstacles to inclusion for people with disabilities – for example, using special programs to meet their every need or giving up in the face of community resistance. He tells us about eight families who exemplify the idea of inclusion and how we can learn from them to achieve inclusion through community life. The children of these families had either life threatening or complex medical conditions, or very challenging behaviours, but in every instance parents spoke positively about their children’s abilities and did not see their disabilities as the main issue.
