Vocational Training and Employment: Guidelines for Parents
This article offers strategies for parents concerning the lack of vocational and employment opportunities for young adults with disabilities as they leave the school system. It offers useful guidelines to parents for actively encouraging their child and their child’s school to begin the process towards learning about employment, and to encourage the school to provide opportunities for work experiences and eventual job placement in regular employment. It concludes that parents “no longer need to settle for placement of [their] child into an adult day program or a sheltered workshop that pays no wage or a very small sum of money paid only on a piece rate basis”.
