Living Community Inclusion

Written Material

This article describes a woman's move from an institution (described as her "liberation") to university and family life. It is also about friendship and commitment, about how professionals can work in a truly supportive role. The story shows that 'community' means different things to different people; for Joanne her community includes her family, her friends (and support workers), her university classes and groups she is involved with, her neighbours, the farm where she lives. In this way the author shows that 'community' is not some singular concept that becomes like yet another 'program'. The story also shows the importance of surrounding people with groups of support including friends, advocates, supportive professionals and family. Keyword: Inclusion
