Michael Smull stresses the importance of rituals in our lives. Smull points out how rituals ease us through our days, and add to our quality of life. He suggests that it is important for those supporting people with disabilities to consciously consider the role of ritual in their lives and to ensure the presence of positive rituals. It is important that the rituals are those which reflect the individual with disability - they should not change every time there is a staff turnover. Just as we may be 'thrown' by a change of ritual (or habit), so may people with disability. This is not to say that rituals shouldn't change, but that they should change at a pace dictated by the individual. Keyword: Individualisation Searchword: Self Determination
