This article describes a euthanasia programme which took place in Germany in the 1930s. This article serves as a timely reminder of how easily such a situation can be put in place with the tacit agreement of quite ordinary people of seemingly moderate persuasion. The author astutely points out that the involvement of a highly respected scientist, Hallervorden, indicates that science cannot proceed in a vacuum - a point that has extreme relevance in this day and age.
