Transition from primary to secondary school

Sandy Alton, a specialist advisory teacher, suggests ways that students with Down Syndrome can be enabled to make a successful transition from primary school to high school. Alton stresses the importance of good liaison between primary and high school and relevant professionals, as well as the need for staff training. She offers practical advice on making the high school experience more relevant for a student with special needs, citing good communication between the school and parents, conscious encouragement of friendships/relationships, development of independence skills and ways of setting relevant homework.
